An old man falls into the river

An old man stood at the edge of the river, studying the fallen tree that lay across it. It was his only way to the other side, and though the trunk was wet and slippery, he was determined to cross. With careful steps, he placed one foot in front of the other, his arms outstretched for balance.

The river beneath him flowed steadily, reflecting the overcast sky. He moved cautiously, each step feeling more uncertain than the last. Halfway across, a sudden gust of wind made him hesitate. His foot slid slightly, and before he could regain control, he lost his balance completely.

With a loud splash, he plunged into the cold water. The current pulled him away from the tree as he flailed his arms, trying to stay afloat. Moments later, he surfaced, coughing and drenched, but laughing at his own misfortune.
